The Problem and Solution

The ABC Design Company was consistently losing customers. As a result, their sales were down, and they were not meeting their quarterly goals. After a needs assessment, I determined that customers were not reusing the ABC Design Company because they were unhappy with the designs they were receiving. Upon further assessment, I discovered that many of the designers were new to the company and did not have a lot of design experience. They were not incorporating the principles of visual design into their work. So, I suggested providing the knowledge the designers needed in a dynamic document.

My Process

I developed this tab interaction for the principles of visual design from start to finish. It began with an action map to define the business goal and high priority actions needed to accomplish this goal. Then I created a storyboard and a prototype before moving ahead and working on the final version of the project.
Action Map
The action map focuses on the actions needed to accomplish the business goal. In this case, the actions were what newly hired designers needed to do to increase customer satisfaction. Because I determined the designers were lacking the knowledge to perform the actions needed to reach the goal, I suggested providing the information they needed in a dynamic document.
Text-Based Storyboard
The storyboard serves as the blueprint for the project. It includes the content and visual notes that will appear on the slide as well as the programming notes that make the slide interactive.
This project was developed all on one slide with multiple layers. This type of development allows the learner to access the information in small chunks, therefore reducing their cognitive load.
Once completed, I sent the storyboard to ABC Design Company for review.
Interactive Prototype
After the storyboard was approved, I began working on the prototype. It included the first two layers of the project with all the programming necessary to make the project interactive .
I sent the prototype to the company for review.
Full Development
It was time to develop the final project, which included creating the four remaining layers. While creating, I focused on presenting the information in clear, manageable segments for the learner. In addition to providing examples of each design principle, I included counterexamples to reinforce both the correct and incorrect approaches, ensuring designers understand what to do and avoid in future projects.
